“ONE OF GPM’S
PRIORITIES IS
MODERNISATION
OF HANDLING”
MODERNISATION OF HANDLING PROCEDURE

The renovation of the container terminal, the rainwater drainage network
and the power-distribution network, already initiated under the first
strategic project, will be finalised over the course of this new period, with
an overall price tag of €18 million.
In parallel to this work, the improvement of the traffic plan will allow trucks to be oriented towards
dedicated areas, ensuring an optimisation of personnel safety. Another important improvement: the
installation of a Terminal Operating System that aims to locate containers and ensure time saving.
A major element of this modernisation plan is the installation of two port cranes, a revolution that will
have a significant impact for all.
Currently, vessels docking in the Port of Dégrad-des-Cannes are required to have their own cranes
on board. These mobile cranes, with a capacity of 8 movements per hour, are unusable in rain and
represent a risk for docker safety.
Further to two years of consultations and reflections with the handling companies, we have chosen the
option of rail-mounted port cranes. The contract was issued in November 2018 to a Franco-Chinese
consortium.
With the acquisition of this new equipment, we will reduce vessel stopover time and the risks for
dockers, whilst at the same time increasing the loading and unloading speed.
This project requires an investment of €21 million split between European funding (10.5 million),
French government funding (€3.5 million) and funding from the Port (€7 million). This sum includes
the construction, transport, civil-engineering work (adaptation of the wharfs to install rails) and the
construction of a maintenance workshop.
This will also create the need for qualified workers. 16 crane operators from the GEMAG (dockers
management board) will thus be trained in the operation of these new cranes prior to their entry into
service foreseen for 2021.
