ENERGY PORT TERMINAL OF FRENCH GUIANA WEST SIDE
During this new strategic energy port terminal of French Guiana West site, the GPM-Guyane would
like to strengthen its position of regional developer by creating an energy port terminal in the district
of Saint-Laurent du Maroni, a town that is experiencing rapid demographic growth.
On a site of 1500 ha located downstream of the western regional capital and forming part of the
Operation of National Interest, the development of this driver for economic growth will support the
needs of an industrial and trading port. This project tailored to the development of French Guiana
West side in partnership with stakeholders.
Projects aimed at clean energy could emerge in the west, as exemplified by a biomass plant.West side
major companies such as EDF and Sara could also invest in this part of French Guiana.
UE BORDER POST
The creation of a EU border post in the port of Degrad-des-Cannes has, for many reasons, been
considered to be one of the strategic projects. This essential link in the transport chain will allow the
control of main non-EU products intended for human food (border inspection posts), animal food
(designated points of entry) and vegetables (authorised points of entry).
In addition to the port’s attractiveness, the installation of a EU entry border post in French Guiana would
reduce the transport times by bringing non-European products closer to French Guiana consumers.
Let us take for example a product imported from Brazil: the current situation imposes 45 days of transit
and a very high price so that it can be verified in Le Havre then sent back to French Guiana. With the
deployment of a EU border post in Degrad-des-Cannes, this importation period would be reduced to
5 days of processing and would be much less.
This reduction of lead times and costs would also less expensive translate into a significant reduction
of the carbon footprint, strengthening the position of the Grand Port Maritime in its sustainable policy.
The cost of this equipment has been estimated to be €6 million, will be financed by the GPM-Guyane
for an amount of €2.7 million, the French government, which will finance €2.3 million, and the EU
Feder, which will cover the balance of €1 million. It would host mainly the services of the Agriculture,
food and forest Management (DAAF) and the services of the Customs authority.
The EU Border Post should enter service over the second semester of 2022.
