IN FRENCH GUIANA, THE
TERM “DÉGRAD” REFERS TO
A SITE FOR LOADING/
UNLOADING A BOAT.
HISTORY OF THE PORT
In accordance with the Law of 19 April 1898, in
1969 the Chamber of Trade and Industry of the
French Guiana Region was entrusted with the
concession for the ports of Cayenne and Saint-
1969 Laurent du Maroni, then, through successive
amendments, for the ports of Dégrad-des-Cannes
and Larivot.
The trade port of Dégrad-des-Cannes was built
on the left bank of the River Mahury, to replace 1974
the old port of Cayenne, which had reached
capacity. It entered into service in 1974.
As of January 1st, 1984, with the deployment of the
decentralisation, the Port of Dégrad-des-Cannes
1984 was addressed through a distinct concession
of national interest, for which the CCI Guyane
ensured the operational management, under the
supervision of the French Government represented
locally by the DDE (Direction Départementale de
l’Equipement).
Since April, 19th 2001, this concession
covered the administrative (land/sea) scope
of the ports of Dégrad-des-Cannes (in Rémire- 2001
Montjoly) and Pariacabo (in Kourou).
Since January 1st, 2013, the port concession
2013 for Dégrad-des-Cannes/Pariacabo became a
Public State Body, called Grand Port Maritime
de la Guyane, in accordance with the Decree
of October 1st, 2012.
