LE CANAL DU MIDI
This waterway has been heritage-
listed by Unesco since 7 December
1996 and is now devoted primarily
to water tourism and leisure. It
was designed and constructed by
the Béziers engineer Pierre-Paul
Riquet and connects the Atlantic
to the Mediterranean, running
for 240kms. The Canal du Midi,
also dubbed as the ‘Canal of the
Two Seas’ winds its way between
Toulouse and Sète. You can admire
Pont du Jonquié, a bridge built in
1676, and the Ouvrages du Libron
Balades pédestres (Libron works) dating back to
1858. Its verdant, shaded banks are
cherished by ramblers and cyclists.
